Liga MX Rankings: Week 2
The second week of Liga MX definitely had surprising results. While it’s still early to tell who will make it to playoffs, we at least have an idea of which teams could become serious contenders. Here are our contributor’s top teams of the week.
5. Atletico San Luis
After six years in the second division, San Luis earned their first win of the season in Liga MX. Matias Catalan scored a strong freekick just outside the box, too much for Monterrey’s Marcelo Baroveo to handle. Defeating one of the best and expensive teams in Liga MX will be a moment to remember for the players and their fans. Although there are still more games to go, a little history has been made.
4. Chivas
After suffering four consecutive losses in friendlies, international matches, and in the first week of Liga MX, Chivas finally found a victory. But this wasn’t just any victory. Guadalajara defeated the defending champions, Tigres. A header from Antonio Briseño and a penalty from Alan Pulido was enough to stop Tuca Ferreti’s team and fight against relegation.
3. Atlas
Los Rojinegros are starting off on the right foot as they have two straight wins in the Apertura 2019. After ruining FC Juarez’s first division debut, they were able to leave with an away win against Monarcas Morelia. Atlas remained at the top of standings until Santos Laguna took over, the team they will be facing in week 3. Will Atlas be able to pull off a victory?
2. Pumas
Pumas took down recently ascended Atletico San Luis with a 2-0 result and then, Los Felinos secured another 2-0 victory against Necaxa in the Olimpico Universitario stadium. Since Michel’s arrival, the Pumas head coach has built a team that looks very different from their previous season. Michel’s squad has style and dominance on the field that could help them get far this year.
1. Santos Laguna
The only team to stay on our list after last week is also leading in the standings. Santos Laguna defeated FC Juarez 3-0 in Torreon and is showing the danger they can create to other Liga MX teams. Los Laguneros seem like they are having no trouble so far this season as they have scored six goals and conceded none. Our team is already expecting for Santos to be on our rankings list next week, what do you think?
