Lopsided El Tri win gives Mexico a ticket to the FIFA U17 World Cup knockout stage

The U-17 “El Tri” team took the win Sunday afternoon against the Solomon Islands in a game that gave Mexico the qualification to the knockout round and was a goodbye for the opposing team in this U-17 World Cup. The goals came in sooner than expected in this game. With a great assist by Bruce El-Mesmari, Efrain Alvarez put the ball into the back of the net at minute 2 and opened the scoreboard for “El Tri”. The Solomon Islands struggled to get past the midfield to get any kind of opportunity or a shot on goal. A free-kick given to Mexico allowed for a second goal at minute 33 by Jesus Gomez. Mexico took advantage of the rebound by the Solomonian goalie and simply pushed the ball into the net.

The Solomon Islands didn’t seem to find a rhythm throughout the first half and a defensive error gave the opportunity for Mexico to score again. At minute 44 Luis Puente scored the third goal of the match, leaving the Solomon Islands with a disadvantage over Mexico after the first half.

More goals came in during the second half for the Mexican squad. An own goal at minute 55 by Davidson Malam gave “El Tri” the fourth goal of the night. Once again, the Solomon Islands had very little shots attempted, throughout the match they were very confused with no rhythm and with a not so good defense. Mexico got four more goals to make the scoreboard 8 to 0 by the end of the game.

Mexico will advance to the knock out round where they will face Japan Wednesday morning. The Solomon Islands’ very first U-17 world cup participation came to an end with 0 points on the table but a decent experience.
