Mexico Advances to Gold Cup SemiFinals with Win Over Honduras

Mexico advanced to the Gold Cup Semi-Final after a 3-0 route of Honduras in Phoenix, Arizona. After a tough win against El Salvador, El Tri needed to show everyone that they are still well above the CONCACAF competition, especially going into the elimination rounds. While Honduras came into this game handicapped, as they were missing various key players due to a mix of injuries as well as positive COVID cases, this result should help to ease some nerves for the Mexico faithful.

Mexico fans showed up in force to State Farm Arena in Phoenix, Arizona to support El Tri.

For El Tri, all their damage made came in a span of 12 minutes in the first half. Mexico controlled most of the game, with Honduras focusing on defending, having just one striker up front. From the 26th minute to the 38th, el Tata’s men rained down on los catrachos and scored their three goals. First came Rogelio Funes Mori. The naturalized Mexican found the back of the net once more in this tournament and scored a precise header to open up the score. Five minutes later, LA Galaxy star, Jonathan Dos Santos came in with a volley from outside the box to extend the lead. Seven minutes afterwards, Orbelin Pineda would seal the final 3-0 with a powerful running header past the Honduran goalkeeper. These three goals would be enough to last the Mexico team the rest of the way. Honduras had few attempts at goal and Mexico simply needed to manage the game until the final whistle. Surely fans can be pleased with Mexico’s gameplay, most especially with Funes Mori as he continues to prove himself and win the hearts of skeptical fans. So far in this tournament he is Mexico’s leading goal scorer with three goals (followed by Orbelin Pineda who has two to his name). Even more pleasing was that there were no incidents reported in regards to the infamous grito.

Mexico now waits for the winner of Costa Rica vs Canada to face off against them in the Semi-Finals. Don’t forget to follow El Tri Online to stay up to date with this and all news surrounding Mexican soccer!
