Can El Tri Avoid Another 'Aztecazo'?

Mexico Looks To Avoid Another ‘Aztecazo’, But Can They?

The Mexican National Soccer Team is back home after the frantic comeback victory against Jamaica in Kingston (2-1). Today, El Tri will host Costa Rica, a rival who will be on the hunt for a new edition of the “Aztecazo.”

Now, it’s been 20 years since Los Ticos wounded Mexico in the 2002 World Cup qualifying match. However, Mexico’s head coach Gerardo Martino appears confident that his team’s superiority will be key in earning those three points at home. “I don’t remember any game in which we have been dominated,” Martino said in a press conference Saturday night. “Having supremacy against the rival has coincided with the positive results.”

On their part, the Costa Ricans come from defeating Panama (1-0) and Honduras (2-1). The men managed by Luis Fernando Suárez are conscious that a victory over Mexico combined with Panama losing against Jamaica will put them in a position to dispute the half ticket to the 2022 World Cup. Therefore, the game against the Mexican team is vital in their aspirations for a sixth World Cup participation.

In addition, in the last qualifying match disputed between the two this past September, Mexico came out victorious at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica, where Orbelin Pineda was the sole scorer of the match.

Today, the possible “Aztecazo” seems far-fetched… or does it? Nevertheless, Mexican fans recall the defeat that took place on Jun. 16. 2001, when Rolando Fonseca and Hernán Medford silenced the Coloso of Santa Úrsula. The final score was 1-2, for Mexico the scorer was José Manuel Abundis.
