Mexico lost in heartbreaking fashion against Italy in FIFA U17 World Cup
Mexico and Italy faced each other for the second round of the FIFA U17 World Cup. They had an entertaining first half as both teams showed even possession of the ball and speed.
Throughout the first half, both teams showed good defensive play. Mexico took the first shot at goal but that attempt was stopped by the Italian goalkeeper Marco Molla. At minute 37, Mexico had a clear chance to open the scoreboard due to a penalty. The shot was taken by Israel Luna but it was rejected by the Italian keeper. Mexico continued to put pressure but the Italian defense made it difficult for the young Aztecas. Both teams left the scoreboard 0-0 after the first 45 minutes.
The game began to intensify in the second half as both teams looked for the victory. In the 74th minute, Italian player Wilfried Gnonto scored the first goal of the match. “El Tri” retaliated with a couple of missed opportunities until 2 minutes into stoppage time. Efrain Alvarez scored to tie the game and secure the point for Mexico. A couple of minutes later the Mexican defense made a crucial error and gave the opposing team one more goal. In the 94th minute, Lyenoma Udogie slightly touched the ball to send it underneath the Mexican goalie, giving them the game-winner and the three points.
Mexico will have to win against, the Salomon Islands and with a bit of lady luck to keep their hopes alive in order to advance to the knock out stage.
