Mexico opts for youth against Trinidad & Tobago
A young El Tri squad will face Trinidad & Tobago in Toluca this Wednesday for an international friendly. The game will be in preparation for El Tri’s upcoming matches in the CONCACAF Nations League against Bermuda and Panama.
Tata Martino has brought some of Mexico’s youngest and brightest stars to evaluate. Among the players who were called were Leon’s striker Jose Juan Macias, who will be representing Mexico for the first time at the senior level. Monterrey’s Jonathan González will make his return to the senior squad after debuting in January 2018. Pachuca’s Erick Aguirre will bring his creativity into the midfield and create chances in attack for Macias and Queretaro’s Paolo Yrizar.
Only two of the players who were called up to face Trinidad & Tobago are over the age of 23. Most of the current squad is expected to compete in Olympic qualifying early next year with U-23 coach Jaime Lozano.
Trinidad & Tobago’s most dangerous weapon upfront is Kevin Molino. Molino has 19 goals in 43 appearances for his national team and was part of Trinidad & Tobago’s 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup squad. The Minnesota United midfielder can create havoc and disrupt Mexico’s backline.
