Mexico shows very little in a scoreless draw in U-17 World Cup debut
Mexico made its debut in the U17 World Cup against Paraguay Tuesday night in Brazil. The Mexican side struggled throughout the entire game to finish plays and score goals. In addition to the woeful play, cards and injuries made it difficult for the Mexican squad to come out with the three points.
Paraguay showed dominance as they maintained control of the ball during the first half. Mexico continued to push and tried getting past the tight midfield but was able to get only a couple of shots on target.
Young Galaxy talent Efrain Alvarez did get his shot attempt blocked by a Paraguayan player in what appeared to be his best chance of the game. Moments later, a goal by Israel Luna was called back due to an offside. After a disappointing first half, the teams left the field with a scoreless match.
The second half of the game began similar to the first. Paraguay maintained ball dominance, and Mexico didn’t look any better. The Mexicans continued to be off-sync. They lacked the technique to capitalize on their goal opportunities.
Bruce El- Mesmari was subbed by Bryan Gonzales, in the hope of creating some momentum and dynamic the remainder of the game. However, a questionable call on Eugenio Pizzuto left El Tri in a difficult spot. As Pizzuto tried to stop himself from injuring the Paraguayan player, he fouled him and received a red card.
Despite the advantage, Paraguay would be unable to score, and the game ended with no goals. The match featured lots of fouls, injuries, and very little football, which ultimately create concerning thoughts for the Mexican fans. Mexico will face a problematic test against the Italians in the next their next match date this coming Thursday. If they fail to win, it could jeopardize their visit to Brazil.
