Mexico to play, Cuba, Canada & Martinique in Gold Cup Group A
As we get closer to the ultimate CONCACAF tournament this summer, the Gold Cup, many teams in the confederation will begin with a clean slate. Tournament favorites Mexico and the United States, along with Canada are the only teams to have won it all, will have new faces leading them this time around.
A Show to Remember
Mexico has previously won seven of these titles, their most recent was in 2015. Although they were favorites to win it in 2017, they were shocked by Jamaica and lost 0-1 in the semi-final. The Mexican national team gave many fans hope of imagining great things when they beat Germany 1-0 in the World Cup; now it’s Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s turn to provide the fans with new reasons to dream. In January 2019, Mexico appointed Martino as their head coach and in his first two matches “Tata” has managed a 2-0-0 record and gained the confidence of his players. His style of play was evident from the start, and we were able to see his imprint on the team. Martino stated that the team elevated his aspirations from what he expected, they had very few practices and not only were they great but they handled them courageously, let’s hope we can keep buying into the idea and we can grow as a team. El Tri expects to win their eight Gold Cups in their history when they start their journey in Pasadena, California on June 15th when they face the Cuban National Team.
Mexico’s opponent, the Canadian national team is also hoping the new direction the team is heading will bring them back to glory. In January of last year, they appointed England’s John Herdman as their skipper who is in charge of all youth cams U14 and upwards. Canada failed to reach the World Cup this past summer and hasn’t won The Gold Cup since 2000. Canada will look to turn things around in this new era, and they hope to join Mexico as the two teams to come out of Group A.
The U.S Men’s National Team is under the new leadership also with new head coach Gregg Berhalter who is 3-1-0 in his last four matches since getting appointed in December of 2018. Coming off a disappointing performance in the World Cup qualifiers the U.S federation knew it was time for a change. When asked about how difficult it is to choose from a diverse pool of players Berhalter stated: “diversity is what makes us strong and when we’re able to choose from several different backgrounds in our team it makes us stronger.” Berhalter debuted as the USMNT skipper in a 3-0 win over Panama back in January 2019. The U.S will highlight Group D with Panama and will get set to face them in the last game of the Group stage in Kansas City.
