Mexico US Tour: Gold Cup Final Rematch, Argentina at the Alamo

Dating back to International friendlies against CONMEBOL teams, the Tata Martino era is off to a perfect 10-0-0 start. Three of those matches were with many of the first team players that for whatever reason decided not to report for the Gold Cup. Regardless of who is on his roster, it seems as if everyone has bought into his attacks and defends his style of play.

The Mexican national team left Soldier Field as CONCACAF’s 2019 Gold Cup champions after defeating the United States men’s national team 1-0 after a late game-winner by Jonathan Dos Santos. Though El Tri dominated the opening phases of the tournament, they seemed to struggle in the later stages. Tata Martino’s men scored an average of three goals per match in the group phases and managed to notch one goal per game in the knock out rounds. Ultimately, even with a team that some may call a second/third string team, the end result that everyone expected came to fruition.

For their part, the USMNT won’t have to wait long until they get their rematch on home soil. It was announced that El Tri and the USMNT will face off at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 6, 2019. This will be the 70th time these two countries face off since the FIFA World Cup in 1934. Mexico holds an overall advantage with 35 wins 19 losses and 15 draws.

The Mexico U.S. tour won’t end there; the Mexican team is scheduled to play against long-time rival Argentina on Sept. 10, 2019, in San Antonio, Texas. Gerardo Martino will be facing the last international team he managed in 2016. The Argentine squad is coming off a poor performance in the Copa America, barely qualifying for the knock out rounds and earning 3rd place overall. This will be the first time both nations face-off since November 2018 when La Selección Mexicana lost twice 2-0 in a span of 4 days in international friendly competitions. Argentina holds the overall advantage with 15 wins, 14 draws and only five games lost. El Tri has not beaten the Albiceleste since their 1-0 victory on July 10, 2004, in Copa America.

It will be a while before any of the final rosters are announced. Whether Pullisic or Messi will be suiting up for their respective countries is what many are wondering. The real question that now remains is, who will be in Tata’s roster for this upcoming U.S. tour?
