Mexico’s next Gold Cup challenge: Costa Rica
Mexico’s 3-2 victory against Martinique on Sunday marked seven continuous wins for the team under Tata Martino as head coach, four of them friendly and three official matches.
El Tri’s next challenge will be against Costa Rica in the Gold Cup quarterfinals Saturday evening at NRG Stadium in Houston.
After training this Wednesday morning, the Mexican team will be departing from Charlotte in the afternoon on a private flight.
What to expect ahead of Mexico vs. Costa Rica:
We can expect an intense match, as Los Ticos will be fighting to earn their first-ever win against the Mexican team in the tournament’s Gold Cup era.
“We are prepared to beat anyone,” Gustavo Matosas, Costa Rica’s manager, said in a press conference. “Mexico is an outstanding team, but in the end, it’s 11 against 11 on the pitch.”
As for Mexico, in their last 19 games against Los Ticos, they have beaten them 14 times, drawn 4 and lost only once. The one defeat took place in San Jose Costa Rica during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
Though statistics are in their favor, defensive distractions like the ones in their match against Martinique can cost them their ticket to advance to the next round.
