Mextranjeros in Europe: The quest for a Champions League title continues
There were some great results in favor of the Mextranjeros and their clubs today in the Champions League. As the group stages begin to get interesting, Atletico Madrid and Herrera took a close-call win over the FC Red Bull Salzburg. Also, FC Porto and Corona came out victorious over Olympiakos. Let’s break down today’s matches and stats and how the Mexican Players performed.
Herrera and Atletico Pull Off the Win
With 82 minutes on the pitch, Hector Herrera helped Atletico partial tie with Salzburg before being subbed off. Atletico managed to get on the board one last time to make it a three-two win. The Spanish team had the upper hand in both shots and shots-on-target but did have less possession of the ball at the end of the match. This reason is why they struggled and took almost the entire match to get the game-winner. The goal by Joāo Felix who controls it in the penalty area after a cross in and fires to the right-hand corner of the net. With today’s victory, Atletico is now in second place in Group A with three points under Bayern München.
Tecatito and FC Porto now in 2nd place in Group C
Jesus Corona got a chance to be on the pitch for the match’s first goal, which came in at the 11th minute. A defensive error from Olympiakos where Porto took advantage and got the ball into the net for an early lead. From there, Corona continued to show his skill creating several chances. At the 61st minute of the match, Tecatito received a yellow card for his behavior against the ref for a foul called on one of his teammates. Not long after, the Mextranjero was subbed off at the 69th minute for the Brazilian forward Evanilson. Porto went on to score once again at the 85th minute and sealed the two-nil victory.
Edson Alvarez did not play with Ajax today, who ended their match in a 2-2 draw against Atalanta and are now 3rd place in group D. These solid victories keep showing some improvement from the Mexican players across Europe. It makes you wonder how far they will get on the best club tournament in the World.
