Monterrey eliminates the regular season leaders Santos with a 6-3 aggregate
Monterrey takes care of business in torreon and takes down the regular season league leaders after a 1-1 tie, and an overall aggregate score of 6-3.
Santos had the tall task of having to come back in the 2nd leg of the quarter finals against Los Rayados after losing the first leg to a resounding 5-2 score that really surprised many out of the northern region of México.
Santos pressured the attacking third as expected being the team needing to score. In the 20th minute, Brian Lozano sent a blazing shot from the corner of the 18 yard box that left Monterrey goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero stunned and just looking at the shot with amazement that went into the top right corner of the goal.
Los Laguneros were now two goals away from making the desired comeback, but had to beware of the Monterrey counter attack as one goal could be deadly to their hopes.
The rest of the first half, Santos would create opportunities but seemed too anxious and could not finish the final plays, but took the 1-0 lead into the half.
The first 15 minutes of the second half did not start off well for Santos as Monterrey stole the ball and in a blazing counter-attack found a goal by the Forward Vincent Janssen in the 57th minute but it was deemed an offside.
The play was sent to VAR for a review as the on the field call was first deemed on offside on Janssen. Unfortunately for Santos, the call was then reversed and it was deemed a valid goal which gave the European Forward Vincent Janssen his second goal of the series and gave the Rayados the 1-1 tie and the 6-3 aggregate lead.
Santos was never able to come back after that goal by Janssen, they created very few opportunities after but the same creative team that dominated the regular season disappeared in the liguilla.
The final whistle was blown and Monterrey defeated Santos 1-1 in the second leg and an aggregate score of 6-3, eliminating the regular season league leaders. Los Rayados became the third team of the lower seeded playoff teams to win their series and now awaits the result of the America vs Tigres game to know their semifinal opponent.
