Óscar “Conejo” Pérez says goodbye to professional soccer, Toluca Cruz Azul ends in 1-1 draw
Iconic Mexican goalie Óscar “Conejo” Pérez stepped on the field one last time during the Cruz Azul-Toluca match this evening. It was an emotional night in Estadio Azteca for those in the stands and those watching from home during the farewell of the 46-year-old who spent his last minutes as a professional soccer player with the team in which he made his debut on Aug. 21, 1993, who he played two decades with.
“Conejo” was teary-eyed while he saw an ovation from the fans present at the home of Los Cementeros during the pre-game ceremony. He received a tribute during half time for his 25 years of passion and dedication to Mexican soccer.
Both Toluca and Cruz Azul kicked off the 2019 Apertura without a win.
Los Cementeros played a better first half in which they had two clear shots on goal, but Alfredo Talavera’s quick reflexes saved Los Diablos both instances.
A ‘golazo’ came in the first two minutes of the second half. Following a corner kick, a rebound from Talavera landed near the feet of Jonathan Rodríguez who shot the ball into the back of the net.
Toluca was able to score a last-minute goal, just as the Super Copa MX 2019 champs were seconds away to earning their first three points of the season.
