Philadelphia stuns Atlanta with a 3-1 comeback win

In an Eastern Conference matchup that pitted the top 2 teams of the conference, the Philadelphia Union hosted Atlanta United in Philadelphia at Talen Energy Stadium.

The goal-scoring action began when Josef Martinez scored at the tail end of the first half. Martinez extended his consecutive goal-scoring streak to 13 games in a row.

Philadelphia’s 18-year-old striker, Brenden Aaronson, would even up the score in the second half after a wonderful pass from Haris Medunjanin. The assist came after Medunjanin stole the ball from a United player, looked up field and lofted a wonderful ball to Aaronson who then struck it in the box past Brad Guzan.

Philadelphia would not let off the throttle as Kacper Przybylko would make the score 2-1 in the 86th minute. Substitute Sergio Santos would be the spark plug the Union needed by assisting Przybylko in the box who, without hesitation, curved a powerful strike into the back of the net.

Kacper Przybylko would get a chance to repay Santos for his assist as minutes later Philadelphia would score their third goal of the game. This time Przybylko guided a low cross into the middle of the box which a trailing Santos hammered in for a goal to seal the game.

Mexico’s Marco Fabian, a recent call up for the upcoming FIFA dates, was substituted at the 85th minute and had little impact on today’s game. The Philadelphia Union now sit firmly atop the Eastern Conference standings and will next face a tough test by visiting Western Conference leaders, LAFC, on September 14th. Atlanta United will host the Columbus Crew on September 14th in Atlanta.
