Philadelphia’s historic playoff run cut short by Atlanta
The Philadelphia Union’s historic run came to an end tonight at the hands of the Atlanta United. The 2-0 loss cut short a magical season for the Union. So far this season, Philly had won their most games in franchise history and won their first-ever playoff game after a come from behind win against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday.
The first goal of the game came in the 10th minute when Julian Gressel chipped a beauty over Andre Blake. The Union keeper left his post to cover a Pity Martinez through ball, but Gressel beat him to the ball and was able to open up the score.
Marco Fabian came in at the 65th minute to spark a comeback but fell short. He totaled three shots in his 25 minutes of play. In the 78th minute, Fabian attempted a shot from outside the box that came close but ultimately just right of the post. One of the key questions after the Union’s elimination tonight is if Marco Fabian will continue in Philadelphia next season. Reports have surfaced of flirtation between Chivas and the Mexican international, and it will be interesting to see what will happen this winter after Fabian’s disappointing season.
Atlanta’s superstar Josef Martinez had failed to convert on some close chances throughout the game but came through when Atlanta needed him the most. In the 80th minute, Martinez chased down a cleared ball from Atlanta’s box. The Venezuelan striker controlled the ball and then hammered home a powerful left-footed strike to end all hope for the Union. Among all the Zlatan and Vela chatter, Martinez proved why he still belongs in the conversation of the MLS’ best striker.
Atlanta did not play their best game of the season, but their offensive talent overwhelmed the Union defense, and that was enough to put them through to the Eastern Conference finals. Atlanta and Philadelphia had similar times of possession and shots, but Philadelphia failed to convert. Substitutes Ilsinho and Fabian were not enough to mount a comeback.
The Eastern Conference finals will now feature Atlanta and Toronto matching up on October 30th. Toronto defeated the East’s number one seed NYFC and will come with some momentum into Atlanta. The Five Stripes haven’t been eliminated since their first-ever postseason game in 2017 and have advanced in ten consecutive elimination situations. Do not be surprised if last year’s champs become champions once again.
