Pizarro and Inter Miami Sent Home from 2020 MLS Playoffs

The 2020 Audi MLS Playoffs kicked off today with the Eastern Conference Play-In Round. The first match saw New England Revolution advance to the First Round of the Playoffs and the second match saw a matchup between Mextranjero Rodolfo Pizarro and Nashville SC.

Inter came into the game with Pizarro on hand but without striker Gonzalo Higuain, as the Argentine player tested positive for Covid earlier in the week. In the end, it wasn’t a striker that Inter Miami needed for this game however, it would be a defense that was sorely missed. The first half started off in favor of Nashville. By the 14th minute of play they were already up 1-0 off a tremendous strike from Randall Leal. A lazy defensive effort allowed him to shoot a rocket from outside the box for the first score of the game. Ten minutes later, Nashville would be up 2-0 thanks to a penalty given. From there, the Miami side struggled to get themselves into the game. They struggled to get any type of meaningful play going on and their defense was abysmal.

Things didn’t improve for the second half either. Early on, in the 57th minute, the defense again played with minimal effort, allowing Dax McCarty to drive the ball, unimpeded, from half field to the edge of the box where he would get a shot off for Nashville’s third goal of the night. From there the Inter squad continued to struggle until the end. Mextranjero Pizarro played the entire 90 minutes, but his actions were not enough to help his team succeed.

Inter Miami will now head into the offseason to regroup for next season while Nashville advances to face off against Toronto in Round One of the 2020 Audi MLS Cup.
