Portland Timber outlast the LA Galaxy in a 3-6 goalfest
With Javier Hernandez absent due to the birth of his daughter and Jonathan dos Santos out on Mexican National team duties, the Los Angeles Galaxy resorted back to the starting lineup which saw them win four in a row. The Angelinos picked up their last point on September 13th in nil-nil draw vs. the Earthquakes, but have since lost four consecutive games.
The Timber did not make things any easier for the Galacticos as they took an early lead in the 14th minute, thanks to a goal from Felipe Mora that was followed by a brilliantly executed free-kick goal right outside the 18-yard box by Jeremy Ebobisse in the 23rd minute that made things 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Not be outdone, the locals picked up the pace, and their aggression paid off. In the 34th minute, Julian Araujo found a perfect opportunity to rip a shot from outside the box that beat Timber’s goalkeeper, Steve Clark, to cut the lead 1-2. The Galaxy continued to ride that momentum and found themselves playing on Portland’s side of the field for most of the rest of the first half. Despite that, the Galaxy would not create any more damage and the teams went to the lockers with the same score.
The home team realizes that time is running out if they want to get into the playoffs; however, at the start of the second half, Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s men receive a significant blow as Diego Valeri scored for the visitors only two minutes into the action. The Galaxy was able to cut the lead on a brilliant goal from an Ethan Zubak header that was set up by an excellent Cristian Pavon cross.
With the home team down 2-3, things began to unravel. Portland scored two goals in a 3-minute stretch to find themselves up by three goals. Mora scored his second of the game in the 60th minute, followed by Larrys Mabiala’s goal only three minutes later. Pavon would score in the 70th minute, but the Timbers answered right back as Ebobisse scored his second of the night to seal the 3-6 victory.
In the end, the silence at Dignity Health Sports Park was deafening as the local team walked towards the locker rooms with a subpar performance and zero points as the end of the season continues nears and their playoff hopes disspear with every game.
