Puebla Completes their task in Penalties and continues in playoffs

It is over and we have completed the last matchup that continues the next round of playoffs as Puebla managed to win tonight in penalties. Let’s break down tonight’s matchup.

The first 45 minutes of the match went on as usual both teams wanting to read each other and get into the box early. Monterrey the clear favorites had several opportunities to get on the board, but it was only a penalty late in the first half that opened up the score. The penalty was scored by Nicolás Sánchez at the 44th minute with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner of the box. Besides the penalty kick and Rayados getting ahead not much else happened in the first half. The ref blew the whistle as for half time as Los Rayados maintained a 1-0 lead.

Penalties remain king

As the second half kicked off things got really interesting for both teams as Rayados was not done pulling ahead. With another penalty called in the box, Vincent Janssen makes it two-nil at the 50th minute. Puebla did not take this lightly as they decided to get on the board as well soon after at the 61st minute with a free-kick by Osvaldo Martinez who took a right-footed shot to the top left corner of the box and made the score two-one.

Puebla was still not finished tonight. When everything seemed to be done and Monterrey seemed to come out victorious, the away team was also awarded a penalty at the 90th minute of the match. Santiago Ormeño the author of the penalty that tied the game takes a left-footed shot to the bottom left corner. From there 6 minutes of extra time was added and neither team could convert a goal and the match went to a penalty shoot-out.

Puebla was the first to kick in penalties but Javier Salas missed the first shot. For Monterrey, Dorlan Pabón scored the first penalty. from there Puebla went on to score four in a row and Rayados missing two PK’s which punched La Franja’s ticket to quarter-final playoffs for Guardians 2020.
