Pumas edges Chivas, and fans begin to question Cardozo’s future
One of the most attractive games of the weekend featured Guadalajara and UNAM who were both looking to add three points after both losing last weekend. Chivas was trying to get out of their negative slump of not scoring in 342 minutes before the game started. Pumas who is almost out of the playoffs needed to get a victory to stay alive in the tournament.
The game started very intensely and showed why both of these teams are part of the big four of Mexico. Pumas fought hard until Carlos Gonzalez gave the home team the first goal of the afternoon in the 26th minute on a beautiful play that originated from a cross from the left side. Only a minute had passed when the away team received a foul inside the 18-yard box and was awarded a penalty kick. Walter Sandoval was in charge of balancing the score on the 30th minute with a strong penalty kick that traveled through the middle of the goal.
In the 41st minute the felines executed a free kick which ended inside the net thanks to defender Fernando Quintana who found the ball on his foot after the cross. The half ended in favor of the home team who left their fans craving more goals.
The following half started with UNAM attacking constantly and playing ferociously making Chivas nervous. There wasn’t many opportunities on Guadalajara’s side which made Pumas look closer to the goal. However towards the last 15 minutes of the game the away team picked up their pace and Bruno Marioni backed their team up to secure the partial victory. The last part of the half was nerve wrecking for both teams, but luck was on the side of the team from Mexico City as Chivas was not able to finish their opportunities.
The result leaves the playoffs very far away for both teams but with a very small possibility nonetheless. Pumas now has to focus on the semifinal of the Copa MX that takes place next Wednesday and as for Guadalajara, they have to focus on getting more points or they will be in the relegation zone for upcoming tournament.
