The Mexican striker and Wolverhampton Wanderers returned to the winning column after defeating one of the “big four” of English football, Manchester United while dealing a big blow to the Red Devils’ Champions League aspirations.
United aggressively began the game and nearly scored within the first five minutes of the game on a Romelu Lukaku header, but the in the 13th minute, Manchester United would not be denied as Scott McTominay scored on a rolling shot from outside the 18-yard box to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The joy of the Red Devils would not last very long as in the 25th minute, Raúl Jiménez would filter a pass through the Manchester defense that would find Diogo Jota all alone, and he would easily beat David De Gea to even things up for the Wanderers. Lukaku nearly gave the Red Devils the go-ahead goal in stoppage time of the first half, but the teams would go to the lockers with the game even at one-a-piece.
In the 55th minute the visitors once again nearly took the lead on a powerful header from McTominay, but Rui Patrício’s quick reflexes allowed Wolverhampton to breathe a sigh of relief. Unfortunately for United, their luck quickly changed soon after as only two minutes later Ashley Young was shown his second yellow of the game and was sent off after a strong tackle on Diogo Jota leaving Manchester with ten players the rest of the way.
Despite being up a man, Wolverhampton showed patience and wasn’t overly aggressive on the offensive end. Their persistence paid dividends in the 77th minute. During an aerial attack, the Manchester United defenders challenged Jiménez for the ball during a header attempt, but the ball, however, finds its way into the back of the net after it rolls between several players and Chris Smalling inadvertently taps into the goal with his hand.
With the Wolves now ahead in the scoreboard, United continued to press forward but was unable to find the game-tying goal. Jiménez and Wolverhampton walk out of Molineux stadium with a significant victory over of the best teams in the Premier League.
