Recapping the first 2 COPA POR MÉXICO matchdays
Matchday 1
Group A
The opening Copa por México match featured the very first in the history of Mazatlán F.C. The game versus Tigres was a decent one despite the 0-0 score, as the team from Sinaloa showed some signs of brilliance. Tigres, for their part, played in a very Tuca Ferretti-style way and left their fans desiring the goal chant.
Chivas also performed exceptionally well as they went on to defeat Atlas in el Clasico Tapatio. J.J. Macias led Guadalajara by scoring an early goal, as they showed that want to be the team to beat in the tournament.
Group B
Cruz Azul impressed significantly v.s. Pumas. Robert Dante Siboldi’s men showcased that they very little rust despite not having played football since the interruption because of COVID-19.
Las Aguilas del America took care of business in their opening game v.s. Toluca. Los Chorizeros were unable to contain El Piojo’s squad, as the two early goals turned out to be all of his team would need to come out victorious.
Matchday 2
Group A
Mazatlán F.C. did not fare much better in their second game by losing 1-0 to Los Zorros del Atlas. The franchise formerly known as Monarcas, is still looking for their first goal ever and will have to wait until they play Chivas for another opportunity.
Speaking of Chivas, despite being the home team, Guadalajara was unable to contain an all-out assault from Andre-Pierre Gignac. The Frenchman scored two goals for Tigres and allowed them to take the lead of Group A, which’s top spot is up for grabs.
GROUP B
El Clasico Capitalino turned out to be quite the disappointment as America and Pumas played to woeful nil-nil draw that saw only two shots on goal throughout the entire game. UNAM is on the brink of elimination as they are now in dire need of a victory over Toluca and will be depending on the group match result.
La Maquina Celeste proved they are the team to beat in this tournament by defeating Toluca 1-0 and clinching a spot in the semifinals. Cruz Azul will have their hands full against Las Aguilas on Saturday night in another edition of El Clasico Joven, but all they need is a draw to clinch the top spot of Group B.
Not everyone was rusty
Despite the long work stoppage, not every team was rusty as Cruz Azul clearly showed. La Maquina solidify themselves as the favorite to win the tournament and Siboldi has shown signs of great leadership, but also has given chance to some of the youngsters on his roster.
Some pundits are calling this a U-20 pre-season tournament. The claim is that not all the regular starters are playing the entire game, and, in some instances, they do not see any action.
