Ricardo Pelaez, Liga MX’s Great Hoax

Ricardo Pelaez has become the topic of conversation recently as his current team Chivas has failed to deliver on the field since his appointment at the beginning of the 2020 Clausura. Chivas’s latest humiliation to archrival America in the Super Clasico has brought more questions than answers to Guadalajara and its Board.

Pelaez is basically a snake oil salesman, who has been riding his success while in charge of Las Aguilas in 2013 and 2014, to promise championships and a return to glory for title-thirsty teams. Since then he has made his way to the position of Sporting Director for two of the “Big Four” in Liga MX in Cruz Azul and Chivas.

His four term results, over $107 million spent on refuerzos, 4 coaches, 0 Liga MX titles, one finals appearances, 1 Copa MX title, and two cushy jobs for his son,Ricardo Pelaez Ochoa, one as analytics director of the cantera at Cruz Azul,  and a similar role with El Rebaño. Two roles he is horribly under qualified to have.

Pelaez has made more headlines for off the field issues than for on the field success since leaving America. His time with La Maquina is remembered for his constant bickering with Manager Pedro Caixinha and his team’s finals loss to America. During his tenure with Chivas, many of the players he brought in have been at the center of controversy for breaking safety protocols during the ongoing pandemic. The crisis got so bad that team President Amaury Vergara had to take action and sanction players, even removing some from the team.

At the time of writing, rumors have spread that Pelaez has resigned to his position as Chivas’s Sporting Director. Fortunately for him, he knows the inner workings of Liga MX and how certain media can influence public opinion, so he’ll follow his playbook and re-sign as an “analyst” to one of these media entities, bad mouth a struggling but lucrative squad and throw his name in the mix for another top position soon. That’s right folks, Liga MX doesn’t just have a coaching carousel, it has a Directivos carousel as well.
