Santos climbs to first place with 1-0 win against Queretaro

Santos and Queretaro faced off Tuesday evening in a battle between two of the point leaders in the Liga MX table. Santos was looking to take advantage of Necaxa’s bye week and climb to the top of the standings.

The game’s lone goal came from an unlikely source as Santos’ defender Matheus Dória opened up the score at the 16th minute. The Brazilian defender was left alone well outside the box and proceeded to launch one of the goals of the year past the Queretaro goalkeeper.

Los Laguneros would hold on to the 1-0 lead and go on to win behind a great performance from Jonathan Orozco and the defensive backline.

Now comes a stiff test for the league leaders as Santos will travel to Mexico’s capital and face off against Club America. America will be riding high from back to back wins and will look to continue its winning ways at home. Queretaro will next host Tigres at home Saturday night.
