Santos defeats Puebla and continues as the lonely Super Lider
Santos Laguna hosted Los Camoteros de Puebla with a 60% chance of winning according to the odds, due to their perfect streak that now extends to four games played and four games won in Liga Mx.
Both teams had disappointments in their respective Copa Mx games earlier this week, with Santos losing to Chivas 2-1 and Puebla losing to Morelia 1-0.
Los Laguneros started the match strong, and sent out a warning when Adrian Lozano hit the crossbar with a missile shot at minute eight.
La Comarca took the advantage at minute 15 courtesy of Ulises Rivas who sent the ball into the net with a solid header off a corner kick.
At minute 29, Erick Castillo sent a through ball from the left wing to Julio Furch who beat his defender in the small box and deflected the ball into the net to increase their advantage to 2-0.
Puebla shortened their disadvantage via PK on a very controversial call by the referee Montaña, after reviewing the play on VAR. Noria had jumped into the air to clear the ball on a cross by Los Camoteros and accidentally split Jesus Zavala’s eyebrow open with his elbow. The referee determined that it was intentional, called the PK and sent Doria to the team showers with a red card. Gustavo Alustiza stepped onto the penalty spot and converted the goal for Puebla.
Los Camoteros had more possession of the ball after for the remainder of the first half and had a one-man advantage looking into the second half.
At the beginning of the second half at minute 48, Julio Furch drew a foul in the big box and the referee called the PK. Furch himself took the shot and scored. Los Laguneros now increased their advantage to 3-1, giving them the tranquility to play the rest of the game at a low pace due to their player disadvantage.
Puebla tried to come back but they only had a few shots on target that wouldn’t worry Santos.
At the 87th minute, Diego Valdez came into the field and one minute later he scored the fourth goal for Santos off a counter attack.
La Comarca Lagunera continues in 1st place in the stands with a perfect record. They will travel to Aguascalientes to face Necaxa in week 5 of Liga MX.
Puebla on the other hand drop to a 0-1-3 record and will now host an equally struggling Pachuca next week.
