Santos wraps up regular season with tie in Toluca
Santos Laguna will head into the 2019 Apertura playoffs as the table leader after splitting points against Toluca today with a score of 2-2. The match was an intense, back and forth game that provided some great goals. The game caps off a disappointing season for Toluca, while Santos Laguna will head into the playoffs with high hopes for it’s 7th championship.
Santos’ Diego Valdés opened up the scoring in the 10th minute after a superb free kick. Valdés launched a rocket from inside the penalty arc that beat a helpless Alfredo Talavera to give Santos a 1-0 lead. Toluca would tie the score minutes later with a header from Emmanuel Gigliotti.
2 more goals would be scored before the first half ended. William Da Silva took advantage of a Santos defensive lapse and stole the ball near the centerline. The Brazilian midfielder traveled the rest of the half and easily beat the Santos goalkeeper to give Toluca a 2-1 lead.
18-year old Edgar Games tied the game at 2 a piece in the 35th minute after a rebound in the box gave him open space to drill a low shot into the back of the net. The game would end up 2-2 with not much action coming in the second half for either team.
Santos Laguna will shift into playoff mode and is locked in for the #1 spot in the league table. They will play 8th seed Monterrey in the quarterfinals. Toluca bowed out of the 2019 Apertura tournament ending second to last in the league table, just ahead of Veracruz.
