THE HIRING OF MARSH AND VUCETICH EPITOMIZE ISSUES IN LIGA MX
Javier Aguirre was released by Monterrey on Saturday after winning only 5 of 15 points available in the past five matches. Early reports indicate that Los Rayados will bring Victor Manuel Vucetich back to El Norte for another stint. Vucetich did find success with Monterrey winning two Liga MX titles and three CONCACAF Champions League Titles in his previous time ahead of the club.
El Rey Midas, however, is coming off a disappointing stretch as Chivas manager and hasn’t won a title since his time at Monterrey. He also had a forgetful stint ahead of El Tri which ended with Mexico nearly missing the 2014 World Cup.
On paper, this seems like a good move for both Vucetich and Rayados, as it brings a familiar face that was previously successful with the squad back. It does, nonetheless, once again shine a light on a huge issue in Liga MX, the coaching carousel.
Top Mexican teams lack the conviction or in traditional Mexican terms….huevos, to look to new or promising managers. It’s amazing that a successful MLS squad would give a young Mexican manager a shot before Liga MX. (see Gonzalo Pineda, Atlanta United).
Coaches are constantly being recycled even coming off horrible results. Every time a vacancy comes up in Liga MX it seems like the same managers are being considered for the job. Adding to this is the fact that if Vucetich is appointed the new Manager at Monterrey, he will be only the fifth active Mexican manager in the league. Leano, Herrera, Lozano, and Ambriz are the others. If Tata Martino winds up getting fired from El Tri, and the FMF decides to go with a Mexican manager, their choices will be few, and the coaching carousel will continue at the national team level.
So why is this an issue? Glad you asked, as a veteran coach gets replaced by another veteran coach in Liga MX, American Jesse Marsch is being appointed manager of Leeds United, replacing Marcelo Bielsa. Yet again the neighbors to the north have placed another representative on a squad in a top league.
Unfortunately, it seems that just like on the pitch, there is no room for young and up-and-coming talent in Liga MX.
