Tigres 1st half makes the difference knocks out Toluca from playoffs.
Tigres became the seventh team classified to the quarterfinals of the Guard1anes 2020 tournament of Mexican soccer by defeating Toluca 2-1 this Sunday in their reclassification match played at Estadio Universitario. Both teams got off to a slow, sluggish start. It was just a matter of time as Tuca’s team started to take control of the game.
The French superstar André-Pierre Gignac made it one-nil for the Tigres with a header from Colombian Luis Quiñones in the 34th minute. Gignac also made it 2-0 with a free-kick to 38. The French striker placed the ball in the upper right corner. The home team took a two-goal lead going into halftime.
Los Diablos Rojos opened the second half with a more offensive punch. They had more ball possession and produced shots on goal. Sambueza had a great run to keep his team in contention. After Sambu broke the Tigres defense and a crossed ball Toluca approached two-one in the 52nd minute with an own goal from Hugo Ayala, who in his attempt to get the ball into the small area sent it to the bottom of his goal with a deflection. The home team was able to withstand the pressure in the second half. Toluca had a valiant effort, but it was not enough as they lost 2-1 and they had their season end. Tigres advances to the next round of the playoffs.
This Sunday night is the fourth and last game of the playoff round, Monterrey faced Puebla at the BBVA stadium.
