Tigres defeat Leon to win 7th Liga MX title!
Tigres conquered their 7th title in Liga MX. In a battle of Felines, Los Tigres did just enough defeating Leon 1-0 at home and executed a Tuca Ferreti’s style of play at Nou Camp with a 0-0 tie to lift the title.
Leon couldn’t find the way to break Tuca’s great defensive game. After a historic season which saw them breaking all kinds of records, Leon had one of the worst Liguillas. Having the top scorer in the league, Angel Mena with 14 goals, didn’t help them either, since he wouldn’t score a single goal in the six games of the playoffs. And if it wasn’t bad enough, Mena came out injured at the 32nd minute of the last game. The absence of Jose Juan Macias did more damage than anticipated for La Fiera in the final two games. “JJ” was one of the players who overachieved in the regular season scoring eight goals and two more in the playoffs. Perhaps the great moment that Macias was going through would have made a difference.
Los Tigres, on the other hand, continued to impose their reign in Liga MX. El Club Regio can be considered the team of the decade. They conquered their 5th title under the guidance of Tuca Ferretti, and with this crowning, the coach reached the 7th championship of his career and is now tied with Ignacio Trelles as the most successful managers in Liga MX history. Tigres also reached their 7th title and continues their path to finally be called one of “Los Grandes”.
There were 3 key factors in this Tigres Championship, Los 3 Mosqueteros, Tuca, Nahuel and Gignac:
Tuca with his controversial but successful style of play. Many don’t like his defensive style but has proved that when it comes to winning titles it works.
Nahuel Guzman the goalkeeper had an amazing playoff round, he was a key player on each round of this Liguilla. He was named man of the match in a few of them, even though Tuca saying he doesn’t like when this happens because it means his team is not doing well. He still was, in my opinion, the most important player in this championship.
The last ingredient of this “caldo” Andre Pier Gignac, the French national has earned a spot in the books in Liga Mx history. He has earned 4 Liga Mx Titles and reached his 104 goals with the club, he is now tied with Tomas Boy as the highest scorers with the club.
Is Gignac the best extranjero to ever set foot in Liga MX?
