Tigres take lead against America after VAR controversies

In a game full of VAR controversies, it was Tigres who were victorious and defeated America 2-1 in Estadio Azteca in the first leg of quarterfinals.

Miguel Ortega made his first division debut as a starting goalkeeper after Nahuel Guzman suffered an injury last week against FC Juarez. Sebastian Cordova was the first to test Ortega’s skills after a shot outside the box, putting pressure on Ortega.

In the 40th minute, Paul Aguilar crossed the ball into the center of the box, where Miguel Ortega punched out of his area, only to fall onto Richard Sanchez’s feet, hitting the ball into the left post and into the net.

Tigres equalized in the 51st minute thanks to a header from Guido Pizarro during a corner kick. Pizarro’s header went straight to the bottom of the top post and into the goal.

A penalty was marked in favor of America in the 58th minute after Richard Sanchez was knocked down by Diego Reyes but was ruled out after the referee checked VAR.

Another VAR moment happened but this time it was in favor of Tigres. Richard Sanchez lost his focus as Javier Aquino tried to steal the ball inside the box and kicked Aquino in the shin.

The referee confirmed the penalty kick and Andre-Pierre Gignac put Tigres in the lead in the 67th minute. This was Gignac’s 22nd goal in Liga MX playoffs.

Tuca Feretti’s squad strongly complained against the referee after he ended a counterattack because of a possible penalty for America.

After VAR was checked and no penalty was marked, almost every Tigres player confronted the referee for not letting them finish their play before he stopped their play.

Tigres will receive America this Sunday to determine who will move to the next round.
