Toluca remains in the playoff hunt after defeating Atlas

Even though the Argentinian Leandro Cufré was named new Atlas head coach, the team from Guadalajara couldn’t win against Toluca as the Diablos Rojos defeated them in the last match of the 11th round of the 2019 Clausura. That was also the first victory of Ricardo La Volpe in his second stage with Los Choriceros.

Atlas, however, was the first team that tried to create a chance and in a triangle play among Osvaldo Martínez, Facundo Barceló and Jesús Isijara, The latter one, missed the opportunity in front of the goalkeeper, Alfredo Talavera to give Los Rojinegros the lead.

Atlas forgave Toluca, but the local squad didn`t, and in the 28tth minute Federico Mancuello robbed the ball on his left side and passed it to Alan Medina, who scored the first goal of the game.

During the second half, the match continued similarly. In the 65th minute, Anderson Santamaría saved Atlas when the defender slid to avoid a clear opportunity for Pablo Barrientos, who had already controlled the ball but Santamaría denied him a shot in the penalty box.

In stoppage time, Atlas was desperately looking to tie the match and Toluca took advantage of this situation to start a counter that finished with the second goal of the game, scored by Rodrigo Salinas, who, received the ball from Luis Mendoza and in a one-timed shot left no options to the goalkeeper, José Hernández. The victory allows Toluca to climb to the 12th spot of the Liga MX table. Meanwhile, Atlas stays near the bottom in the 15th spot.
