Top 10 Goals in the History of El Clasico Joven

Cruz Azul and America are the two best teams in the 2021 Guard1anes Clausura tournament so far. Cruz Azul, as leader with 12 wins and only 2 losses, faces off this weekend against Club America, who have 11 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses. An America victory would put the “Aguilas” as the new leader.

In recent years, America has beaten Cruz Azul in decisive matches, such as in the two finals played in 2013 and 2018. This time around however, Cruz Azul is arriving in better shape.

Historically the balance is in favor of America, with 64 victories for America, 63 draws and 55 victories for Cruz Azul. Throughout the years great players have participated in the “Clasico Joven”, as it is called, such as top scorers Carlos Hermosillo, Salvador Cabañas, Paco Palencia, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Christian Gimenez and “Zague”. These lethal strikers have scored some of the 499 goals in the history of this head-to-head match.

As a warm-up in anticipation of this weekends match, we bring you our picks for top 10 goals in the history of this rivalry:

10. Cuauhtémoc Blanco (America) – In the first leg of the semifinals of the torneo Clausura 2005, this unstoppable shot on Oscar Perez led America to the finals in 2005 where they would eventually be crowned champions.

  • 9. Mariano Pavone (Cruz Azul) – Pavone scored this stunning goal that began Cruz Azul’s 4-0 rout over America back in 2014.
  • 8. Christian Gimenez (Cruz Azul) – “Chaco” Gimenez scored this beauty off a free kick, despite the fact that the match ended with a victory for America.
  • 7. Carlos Hermosillo (America) – Hermosillo made one of his best goals with America against Cruz Azul, controlling within the rival area, then subtly scoring over the goalkeeper.
  • 6. Juan Francisco Palencia (Cruz Azul) – This great goal from the Cruz Azul idol was a tremendous shot placed just out of reach of the goalkeeper.
  • 5. Moises Muñoz (America) – Probably the most memorable goal of all since it was scored by the America goalkeeper himself, in dramatic fashion no less. This goal was worth the title in 2013.
  • 4. Gerardo Torrado (Cruz Azul) – An unstoppable shot to beat Guillermo Ochoa, this game eventually ended in a 2-2 tie.
  • 3. Juan Ramón Ocampos (Cruz Azul) – An impressive shot outside the area to help Cruz Azul on to victory.
  • 2. Joaquín del Olmo (America) – In the first minutes of the game in 1995, Joaquin surprised his rivals with this long shot. In the end, this match ended tied at one goal.
  1. Antonio Carlos Santos (America) – A solo run to finish with a smooth touch over the goalkeeper, our pick for best goal in the Clasico Joven comes from the 1988-1989 season.
