Top 10 Mexican Goalkeepers of All-Time
A ranking is always going to have some sort of controversy especially when comparing players from different eras, so it’s essential to justify it with clear arguments and statistics.
With no further introduction, let’s take a look at the Top 10 Mexican Goalkeepers of All-Time. Mexico has had some great names defending the National Team, so to make this list we’re taking into consideration three main factors: regularity on the pitch, difficulty of the league/context they played in and general performance.
10. Jesus Corona – Current Cruz Azul goalkeeper and winner of the Mexican Gold Medal in the 2012 London Olympics. “Chuy” Corona has been awarded Best Goalkeeper in Liga MX for 2009, 2010 and 2012. He has also won 2 Copa MX titles (2013 and 2018) and a Supercopa MX title in 2019.
- 9. Adolfo Rios – Adolfo, champion with America and Necaxa, was a goalkeeper who participated with the Mexican National Team in the 1997 Copa America where they finished in third place. He’s the third goalkeeper with the most games played in Liga MX with 635 matches.
- 8. Jaime Gomez – Goalkeeper of the Mexican National Team in the 1958 and 1962 World Cups, Jaime had a glorious time with Chivas de Guadalajara, where they won 7 titles in 9 years.
- 7. Oscar Perez – The player with most games played in the history of Liga MX at 741 matches, el “Conejo” Perez also played for the Mexican National Team, reaching the World Cup in 2002 and, famously, in 2010. He also won the 1999 Confederations Cup as well as two Gold Cups. He is currently a goalkeeper manager with Cruz Azul.
- 6. Ignacio Calderon – Goalkeeper of the Mexican team in the 1970 World Cup, he is recognized as the ninth best goalkeeper of the Concacaf in the 20th century by the IFFHS. He was part of the glorious, multi-championship winning, Chivas de Guadalajara of the 60’s.
- 5. Oswaldo Sanchez – Oswaldo was a World Cup goalkeeper with Mexico in 2006, and an idol in Chivas and Santos Laguna where he played more than 300 games with each team.
- 4. Pablo Larios – Goalkeeper with a great field-player technique, he played for various teams in Mexico, winning 3 league titles, as well as for the Mexican National Team in the 1986 World Cup where he had an outstanding performance.
- 3. Jorge Campos – The iconic and unique Mexican keeper, who scored 48 goals in his career, was champion of the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1999. Campos participated in two world cups and stood out for his technique in goalkeeping. He was named the best goalkeeper of the Mexican league from 1991 to 1995 and was named the third best goalkeeper in the world in 1993.
- 2. Antonio Carbajal – Antonio “La Tota” Carbajal, as he was known, played in 5 World Cups between 1950 and 1966. He is recognized by the IFFHS as the Best Concacaf Goalkeeper of the 20th Century.
- Guillermo Ochoa – Ochoa, current goalkeeper of the Mexican National Team and Club America, is our pick for Best Mexican Goalkeeper of All Time. His performance in World Cups 2014 and 2018 take him to the top of our list. In 2014 he was named as the 7th best goalkeeper of the world by IFFHS. He has been named the best player of the teams he has played for in Europe: Ajaccio (2012), Granada (2017) and Standard Lejia (2019).
