UNAM Pumas stays strong with another 2-0 victory over Necaxa
UNAM Pumas rallied at Estadio Olímpico Universitario to continue their winning streak with a 2-0 victory against Necaxa.
First Half: UNAM Pumas began the game with a great opportunity in the 3rd minute as midfielder Victor Malcorra took a shoot from the box that seemed unstoppable, yet Necaxa’s goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez made a fantastic save to keep the score zero-zero.
Pumas continue to attack and create chances, defender Jeison Angulo was able to put an incredible cross in the 10th minute to find Juan Pablo Vigon on a beautiful run to leave him wide-open and score a header to put his team up 1-0.
Necaxa was not able to create many goal opportunities in the first half as Pumas continue to defend well. Pumas had a couple of other chances in the first half but were not able to connect on another goal. Pumas continued to lead 1-0 at halftime.
Second Half: Seems like Necaxa made some good adjustments at the halftime. In minute 46th, Pumas defender Angulo Trujillo stopped a bicycle kick from Necaxa’s striker Eduardo Herrera. The ball ricochet from his head to his hand as the referee called a penalty kick but called for VAR to make sure it was the correct call. After the review, he concluded in a no-penalty call, although it could have gone either way as the ball did hit his hand inside the box and could have changed Necaxa’s momentum with a chance of a penalty kick attempt.
In minute 68th, Necaxa last-man Alexis Peña fouled Pumas striker Carlos Gonzalez on a clear one-on-one with goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez. Alexis Peña received a straight red card after that tackled and the referee awarded Pumas with a penalty kick. Pumas striker Pablo Barrera scored the penalty kick in the 71st minute to give Pumas a 2-0 lead. Necaxa was a player short after that red card and was not able to create more opportunities.
Key Player: Juan Pablo Vigon was sensational. He was one of UNAM Pumas transfer moves this off-season and his addition seems to be working well with the team as he continued to lead the team to another victory and continue to stay at the top of the Liga MX table.
Biggest Disappointment: Alexis Peña complicated Necaxa’s chances to rally. Necaxa was only down 1-0 and could have made a comeback since they still had about 20 minutes to tie the game. After making that foul and essentially giving Pumas a chance to make it a 2-0 lead. It made it more difficult for Necaxa to rally.
