Vela ties MLS goal record during Minnesota United draw
Carlos Vela scored his 31st goal of the season in a 1-1 draw against Minnesota United. Vela is now tied with Josef Martinez with the most goals in a single season.
LAFC arrived at the Allianz Stadium motivated and confident after winning the Supporter’s Shield last week. Minnesota knew the LA team was seeking revenge after they handed their first home loss in Los Angeles.
Many expected an intense game between the first and second teams of the Western Conference, but not much happened and the first half ended in a 0-0.
It was until the 70th minute where Vela showed his famous left foot and gave LAFC the 1-0 lead. Twitter definitely blew up after this goal and many expected to see Vela’s record-breaking goal.
Carlos Vela ties the record! 🤩

With his 31st goal of the season, the LAFC has tied Josef Martinez's single-season MLS mark! 💪pic.twitter.com/mPx0mbkcBD
Unfortunately, LAFC’s lead lasted only five minutes and Michael Boxall tied the game during a cross into the penalty box and lack of defensive marking from Bob Bradley’s squad.

Carlos Vela has the opportunity to set another MLS record by scoring his 32nd goal against Colorado Rapids next Sunday at the Banc of California. This will be their last home game before heading into the playoffs.
