Zorros Down Gallos at Home, Creep Closer to Liguilla
La Academia held off a late surge by Queretaro to keep them winless in September. Los Gallos have not won since pummeling Veracruz 5-0 on August 27th. With the win, Atlas creeps closer to the Liguilla while Queretaro is in danger of dropping to 8th on the tabla.
Los Zorros got on the board first via a strange own goal by Queretaro. Osvaldito Martinez crossed a ball from the left side of the box, Alexis Perez attempted to clear the ball with his left foot, missed and hit the ball with his right foot into the goal.
Los Rojinegros added to their lead early in the 2nd half on a great header by Facundo Barcelo. Mauricio Cuero sent in a cross from the right side of the box, Barcelo maneuvered between the Queretaro defense and headed the ball to the right of a diving Gil Alcala.
Queretaro had opportunities to get on the board in stoppage time as Ayron Del Valle hit the pole with a right footed shot from distance.
Just two minutes later, Los Gallos failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity, when Martin Nervo’s handball gave them a penalty kick.
Camilo Vargas was the hero yet again as he saved Ayron Del Valle’s right-footed attempt to keep his clean sheet.
Queretaro will look to break their winless streak when they host Los Rayados de Monterrey on Sunday, October 6th.
La Academia will look to continue to keep their Liguilla hopes alive when they visit Los Xolos on Friday, October 4th.
