Cruz Azul takes the series against Tigres, moves on to Semifinals
Cruz Azul maintained their dominance from the first leg even though they lost tonight to Tigres one-nil. They managed to hold Tuca Ferreti’s team to only one goal that came late in the second half and will move on with everything to prove in this tournament that has been a rollercoaster for everyone. Let’s break down tonight’s matchup.
The first half was very subtle for both teams, they read each other cautiously. Trying to find openings and creating chances that were mostly cut short. Tigres was once again the more dominant team on the pitch. Taking 11 shots but none were on target. They went out there to reduce the deficit that they walked in with of having to score three goals to beat Los Cementeros tonight and avoid being scored on.
Cruz Azul on the other hand had other plans they still wanted to increase their aggregate but did not manage to do so in the first half. They had 2 shots on target but both were saved by Nahuel Guzman. With only two minutes added of extra time, the whistle blew for the half and the board remained scoreless.
The Win that meant nothing.
The second half kicked off and Tuca Ferretti started with a tactical substitution. Brining in Nico López and taking out Jesús Dueñas. Cruz Azul had two sub ins of their own at the 57th minute of the match. with that, they kept maintaining the score at zero’s. In desperation, Tuca made some more Sub ins at the 61st and the 67th minute of the match but still no dice. At the 79th minute of the match, a penalty was reverted into a freekick outside of the box that turned into nothing for Tigres.
When everything seemed lost Tigres finally got on the board after so many opportunities at the 83rd minute by Luis Quiñones. He took a long-range left-footed shot that landed in the top right corner. The assist was by Javier Aquino. Only five minutes of extra time was added but it was not enough. Tigres could not pull off the task at hand even though they won the match. Cruz Azul moves on to the semifinals as they will face Pumas in their next series.
