Diego Valdez’ hat-trick helps Atletico San Luis triumph over UAEM Potros 3-1
First Half:
The game started out slow as both teams were trying to find their rhythm. Atletico San Luis started to pick up their offense in the 18th minute after a header off a corner kick. They continued to attack the following play with a shot outside the box from Juan Castro that could have resulted in a golazo, but UAEM Potros goalkeeper Juan Mercado made an acrobatic stop to deny him. Juan Mercado continued to look unstoppable as he denied striker Oscar Benitez on another one-on-one opportunity. But finally, in minute 37th, Atletico San Luis midfielder Diego Valdez opened the score with a header; the first goal of a hat trick night.
UAEM Potros was not very successful in the first half as they kept getting denied before the were able to get a shot on target. The first half ended on a 1-0 score.
Second Half:
Atletico San Luis kicked off the second half with a shot from Carlos Gutierrez from outside the box but did not find the back of the net. But minutes after, Valdez comes through with another header and scores his second goal of the night.
In the minute 59th, UAEM Potros Carlos Esquivel midfielder scored a goal off a free kick attempt that missed every player but found a lucky bounce to make it a 2-1 score.
That goal gave UAEM Potros some momentum to keep the game alive. Both teams continue to battle back and forth but no success to score another goal. Juan Castro had a one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper but kicked the ball directly to him.
In the 82nd minute, Diego Valdez made a terrific sprint to out beat the defender and scored a powerful golazo with the left foot shot to make it a 3-1 score and secure a hat-trick for the night.
Potros gave up in the last 10 minutes of play and were not able to make more opportunities resulting in a 3-1 final score.
Spotlight of the night:
Diego Valdez was without a doubt the best player of that match. Scoring a hat trick and helping his team secure the victory and staying at the top of group 8 for Copa MX.
