Liga MX Countdown Day #2: Xolos hoping for a title run

Xolos de Tijuana made a run in the Liguilla last season as an 8th seed, but after a devastating defeat to Leon (5-2 aggregate) in the quarterfinals, Los Xoloscuintles look to put their best foot forward this Friday to kick off the season.

Xolos had several transfers this offseason, but one of their most significant, was the loss of their forward Gustavo Bou to the New England Revolution. Bou scored eight goals and dished out five assists for the team last season. Despite that, the team from Tijuana managed to fill that void by adding former Queretaro striker Camilo Sanvezzo who led them in scoring four of the previous five seasons.

Tijuana’s schedule looks favorable since they will begin their season on the road against Club Puebla, a team who Xolos have performed quite well against. The team from the border hasn’t lost to Puebla in their last seven meetings (4W, 3D). Xolos has played well during the pre-season and most recently they managed a victory against Boca Jrs following an 88-minute goal from Miller Bolaños. As the new season gets underway, it’ll be interesting to see what coach Oscar Pareja does with the starting lineup given that Xolos is scheduled to play against LA Galaxy on July 23rd in the Leagues Cup tournament.

The following week Xolos will host Querétaro in their home opener July 27th; however, this will be a more difficult matchup since Querétaro has not lost to Xolos in their last three meetings (2W, 1D). They’re also scheduled to face the Gallos Blancos in the Copa MX a couple times.

Perhaps the addition of Camilo Sanvezzo will help Pareja’s men come up big against his former team and have better knowledge on how to get past them. We’re only days away from the start of the 2019 Apertura, so for you Xolos fans out there, make sure to tune this Friday as they kick off their season vs. Puebla.
