MEXICO OLYMPIC PREVIEW: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE PICK
Mexico got its quest for Olympic Gold off to an emphatic start, thumping France 4-1 in their debut match. Now it will face tournament host Japan with the top spot in Group A in the balance. Japan for its part dominated South Africa in their first match of the tournament.
THE GOOD
Mexico was clinical in front of goal scoring on 57% of their shots on target. Getting Alexis Vega and Uriel Antuna on the score sheet will also benefit El Tri moving forward as these two players play better as they grow in confidence. Lainez and Cordova had a solid game as well, with the latter also contributing a goal. Mexico may have the most explosive offense in the tournament.
Japan’s attack also impressed in their debut raking up 13 total shots on goal with five being on target. Japan was definitely the aggressor from start to finish committing as many as eight players to the attack at times overwhelming the South African squad. With a little more accuracy they could have easily won the game by three or four goals. Kubo was spectacular when he drifted to the wings.
THE BAD
Although El Tri was explosive up front, their defense was a bit shaky at times allowing France to take 12 shots, and a lumbering foul gave way to France’s goal. Ochoa did his part making three saves in the game, however allowing the opposition that many shots may have hazardous results for Mexico against better competition. Japan’s speedy front line may give Lozano’s squad fits if not completely focused.
While they dominated possession, shots, and corner kicks in their debut, Japan also dominated in fouls committed. They committed 14 fouls resulting in three starters receiving yellow cards. They may have gotten away with this in their first match but handing an opponent like Mexico that many free kicks may come back to bite them. Japan’s aggressive style maybe the reason they medal or get eliminated early.
THE PICK
Mexico is a slight favorite in this game, but both teams have a positive money line. Japan is @+185 and Mexico is @+145 at the time of writing. A draw @+240 is a tempting wager if you believe the squads are evenly matched. For my pic, Im taking El Tri, again @+145, you can more than double your money.
