Monarcas secures three points after defeating Puebla

The Liga MX has only been three weeks old, and both Monarcas and Puebla are off to a bad start. This Copa MX match between them was a great way to prove to their fans and themselves that they are capable of better soccer. Los Camoteros visited Morelia in search of the first three points of their group which is also made up of Cimarrones.

The away team started strong with a few opportunities, one of them being close to ending in a goal when Daniel Lajud came across the ball in the middle of the penalty area. Puebla kept insisting and knocking on the door but without any luck they weren’t able to get it in between the three poles. As the minutes passed by and the squad led by El “Chelis” couldn’t score, Monarcas grew stronger and was able to find the first and only goal in the 31st minute with an amazing solo play by Luis Mendoza. The rest of the first half was controlled by the home team but were unable to increase the gap in the score.

The second half was nothing like the first with Monarcas mostly defending their only goal and creating a few opportunities, while La Franja didn’t seem in a rush to catch up. The few opportunities both teams had were started by great plays, but executed in a terrible manner with the ball going in all directions except the goal. In the sidelines El “Chelis” was seen uneasy and anxious with his team’s performance in the game. The highlights of the second half were great plays that ended hitting the posts. The match ended with the lonely goal that Luis Mendoza was able to score in the first half.

Both teams have a lot to work on if they want to reach the play off stage in both tournaments and get the furthest away from the bottom of the relegation table in Liga MX. Monarcas will be receiving Monterrey this weekend while Puebla will be traveling up to Torreon to visit Santos Laguna, both being extremely hard teams. El “Chelis” and Javier Torrente have a lot to work on with their teams.
