Qatar 2022: Players looking at El Tri return in Qualifiers

We’re inching closer to the biggest sporting event in the world: the FIFA World Cup.

But first, our beloved Mexican National Team has to earn its spot in the tournament, which will be held this Fall in Qatar.

With CONCACAF’s Final Qualifying Round approaching and only six games left to dictate El Tri’s fate, Gerardo Martino is expected to reveal his roster for the upcoming matches against Jamaica, Costa Rica and Canada at the beginning of next week.

Rumored to be returning to the squad are two defensive players who had some differences with the Argentinian coach and his team, according to TUDN. Here are all the details:

Carlos Salcedo

The 28-year old centre-back, who’s negotiating his move from Liga MX’s Tigres to MLS’s Toronto FC, is said to have been forgiven for his discussion with assistant coach Jorge Theiler during the Gold Cup final against USA.

Last call-up: Gold Cup 2021, July 2021

Gerardo Arteaga

The 23-year old, left-back for Belgian club Genk and Santos Laguna home-grown player, declined going to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to “personal matters,” but it is said that the reason he declined going was that he was going to be benched by Erick Aguirre.

Last call-up: CONCACAF Nations League, June 2021

El ‘Tata’ is said to have 26 to 30 players in his next call-up list, a longer roster than usual due to the current COVID situation.

If the two players mentioned above will return to the team, who do you think will be the next one ‘Tata’ will allow back?

By the way, here are Mexico’s upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches:

Jamaica vs Mexico – Thursday, January 27, 2022, at National Stadium, Kingston, Jamaica

Mexico vs Costa Rica – Sunday, January 30, 2022, at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico vs Panama – Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, Mexico
